Copy of a letter from Major Lewis Ferdinand Smith to HM Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary A diplomatic representative who ranks below an ambassador. The term can be shortened to 'envoy'. to Persia [Iran], Sir Harford Jones, of 22 April 1810. In the letter, sent from Calcutta [Kolkata], Smith, who had been recommended by Jones for employment training Persian troops, explains that the Governor-General of the Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. of Fort William, Lord Minto, had objected to him working in Persia. Smith also requests that he receive payment in arrears for his expenses and a sum to pay for his passage back to England, on the basis that he can find no alternative employment, and provides an account of his expenses and payments already received.
The letter was enclosed in Jones’s Dispatch No. 28 of 14 September 1810, which was received on 6 February 1811.
