About this record
- Content
Translation of an official statement made by Persian plenipotentiaries Mirza Shefi [Mirza Muḥammad Shafī‘ Māzandarānī], the Grand Vizier of the Shah of Persia [Iran], Mirza Buzurk [Mirza ‘Isá Khan Farāhānī, Mirza Buzurg], the Vizier of the Crown Prince of Persia, and Mirza Abdul Wahab [Mirza ‘Abdul Wahhāb Nishāṭ Iṣfahānī], the Royal Secretary, during the negotiations for the revision of the Definitive Treaty between Britain and Persia. The statement is in reply to that of HM Ministers to Persia, James Morier and Henry Ellis, of 16 November 1814 (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/159). The statement concerns the agreement between the former HM Ambassador Extraordinary to Persia, Sir Gore Ouseley, and the Persian Government for the continuance of the subsidy paid by the East India Company to Persia (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/157). The Persian plenipotentiaries state their understanding of Ouseley’s role as a minister plenipotentiary on behalf of HM Government and their belief that the agreement remains binding.
The statement was enclosed in Morier and Ellis’s letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 30 November 1814 (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/158).
