Translation of a letter from Lieutenant-General Wilhemenoff, on behalf of the Governor-General of Georgia, General Yermoloff [General Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov], to the Crown Prince of Persia [Iran], Abbas Mirza ['Abbās Mīrzā Qājār]. The letter concerns the ongoing frontier dispute between Russia and Persia in the Caucasus. In the letter, Lieutenant-General Wilhemenoff states that the stationing of Russian troops on contested territory has been done so on the basis of there being no formal definition of the frontier and in accordance with an agreement between the two sides. He indicates that if the Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. of Erivan [Yerevan] should interfere with the Russian troops, as he had previously done so, he would be ‘obliged to protect the possessions and property of the Emperor [of Russia]’.

This document was originally enclosed in the letter of HM Chargé d’Affaires to Persia, Henry Willock, to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 17 February 1826 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/66).
