agreeably surprised to find that he was merely ignored by the new
regime. He fell from his high estate, but his royal wife, from
whom he has since been divorced, protected him from his enemies.
69. BADf-UD-DAULAH (’Abdul Qasim Khan).
Son of Mudir-ud-Daulah and nephew of Mushlr-us-Saltanah.
70. BADf-rL-MULK.
Son of the late Sarim-ud-Daulah, and Princess Bami-i-’IIzm^.
Had care of Zill-us-Sultan’s household, and was titular Governor of
IsTajafabad, a town of 15,000 inhabitants, about 15 miles west of
Ispahan, until his mother the Bami-i-’Uzma fell out with her brother
the Zill-us-Sultan. He married the fourth daughter of the Zill-us-
Sultan, Princess ’Iffat-ud-Daulah, his cousin.

72. BahA-i-KizA.m (Javad-Khan).
Brother of Saif-ul-Mamalik and Assistant Chief of the guard at Tabriz
(1904), was sent to Mianah to meet Sir A. Hardinge when, in
October 1904, he made a tour to Tabriz.
73. BahArlu tribe oe Mrs.
The Baharlu tribe is one of the five tribes composing the Khamsah tribe.
Was originally brought to Persia by the Saljuks and Mongols in
the twelfth and thirteenth centuries (a tribe of Turkomans called
Baharlu still exists near Khiva). The tribe camps near Darab in
summer and winter.
Nadir Shah gave the chief ship of the tribe to Haji Husain Khdn, of the
Nafar tribe who was succeeded at his death by his son Muhammad
Taqi Khan. The latter’s 1 son ’All Akbar Khan then succeeded, but
was deposed in 1852 in favour of Mulla Ahmad, of the Ahmadlu
branch of Baharlus.
Mulla Ahmad then became known as Ahmad Khan, and on his death
in 1858 the chiefs of various branches fought for supremacy until
1862, when the government troops interfered, and Mirza Charagh
’All Beg, son of Shah Bazd Beg of the Talaka branch, was
appointed Chief. He was killed in 1876 by the sons of Nasrullah
Khan, of the Ahmadlu tribe, and the authorities appointed Husain
Khan Bahddur-i-Nizam of the Isma’ll Khdnl Section, a relative of
the late Mulla Ahmad.
The Bahdrlu are divided into the following 19 branches :—
Ibrahim " Khdnl, Ahmadlu, Isma’ll Khdnl, Barbar, Talaka,
Jamdlhuzurgl, Jarghah, Juka, Hdjl ’Attdrlu, Haidarlu,
Basiilkhani, Sakkiz, Safi Khdnl, ’Isdbeglu, Karlmlu, Kuldhpushl,
Mishhidlu, Nazarbeglu, Varasih.
74. Baha-tjl-Mulk, Qaraguzlu.
** A cousin of Ndsir-ul-Mulk. Has landed property at Hamadan and a
house at Tehran.
75. Baha-tjs-Saltanah (Lutf ’All Khan) Nurl.
Formerly Qavam-i-Lashkar. Son of Mirza Muhammad ’All Khan of
the Nurl family (q-v.). Was Accountant General to the troops in
Pars in 1899. Was Vazlr to ’Ald-ud-Daulah when Governor of
Kirmanshah in 1902 and subsequently acted in r the same capacity
for him in Pars in 1903-04.
His son has received his former title.

The volume contains biographical notices on ‘important members of the Persian [Iranian] Government, principal members of the clergy, and the notables of all classes, as well as a number of minor officials and persons of a lesser degree’. Genealogical information for some families has been included in the form of family trees: the genealogical tables of the Royal Qājār House can be found on folios 73-74.
The notices were compiled by George Percy Churchill, Oriental Secretary to HM Legation, Tehran. It updates, corrects, and enlarges a volume compiled by the author in August 1909.
On the front cover, and folio 3, it bears a stamp reading ‘General Staff Library. War Office. 14 Dec 1910’.
