The site of the town is rocky and slightly elevated above the
sea, but immediately south of it a strip'of very low ground 1
runs across the peninsula from coast to coast; beyond this
low strip the ground begins to rise again, and the’remainder of
the peninsula^ is a sort of turtle back, attaining a maximum
elevation of 150 feet in the centre at Imamzadeh village. There’
is a stretch of low cliff at the south-west corner of Bushire town
and again in the neighbourhood of Reshire. The low parts of
the peninsula are sandy, the higher of firm, arable soil.
After ram in the winter and spring a little grass appears in
odd places. A few her tamarisk and bulbul trees are found
and an occasional cypress, scattered over the island chiefly
in and around the gardens of houses. There are also a few very
small date plantations especially on the low ground near the
mashdeh to the north of the British Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. a t Sabzabad,
Most of the ground is a sandy waste with patches of rock
outcropping at frequent intervals. Fruit gardens and date
palms exist near houses and pits dug dow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. n throughout the top
layer of rock are found all over the island containing vines
and ng trees.
The wells are nearly all brackish and only hold sufficient
water to irrigate small plots containing a few vegetables.
Bushire is situated on a bay, the entrance to which, measured
m a north-westerly direction from Bushire town to the nearest
part of the Rud Hilleh coast, is 5 miles in width. The greater
part of the bay is very shallow, and a large part of it is
occupied by mud flats.
Inhabitants —The population is about 16,000.
Roadstead. The port of Bushire consists of an open roadstead
with an inner and an outer anchorage. At low water the former
has a depth of 21 feet, while .the latter has a depth of 30 feet,
llie two anchorages are separated by mud flats with only 15 feet
of water on them at low water. In the inner anchorage there is
room for mooring 6 or 7 vessels of the British India type em-

loom for a large number of feteamers in 4 to 5 fathoms. It
is marked by a buoy fitted with an automatic occulting white

la moored close to the inner anchorage.
