(I) Fars.
The total number of transport animals in Fars has Up
estimated at about 5,b00 mules, 16,500 donkeys, 2,000 ean,pl 0
and l,7o0 horses. Tins may be regarded rather as an under
estimate than the reverse. It would, however, he very diffien t
to obtain transport in any considerable quantity without rZ
mug the risk of interfering seriously with the requirements of the
inhabitants and thereby incurring their hostility.
At the commencement of a campaign it may be taken pi
fairly certain that the local population would be too frightened
to bi'^g in their animals. As, however, their confidence was
restored it is thought that at least 300 camels 400 mule, l a
