this way Lewis and machine guns inflicted considerable casral-
ties on the enemy with comparatively small loss, as the Qash-
qa is a poor marksman at ranges over 500 yards. (Jn several
occasions the Darash r horsemen charged in mounted, firing
from the saddle. On arriving within 40---50yards of their enemy
they wheel and gallop back to their starting place. Envelop
ing tactics are much practised by them, and they will, whore-
ever possible, attempt to outflank an enemy. The Q&shqai
does not, yhg himeslf in, hut utili o;. any natural cover he can
find (oh the crest of a hill for preference) or constructs sangars.

The volume is entitled Military Report on Persia. Volume IV Part II. Fars, Gulf Ports, Yazd and Laristan. (Simla, Government of India Press, 1924). The volume was originally published in 1923.

The report contains sections on history, geography, population, climate and health, resources, military affairs, communications, and political matters. Appendices give the following information: sub-divisions of the Khamseh Arabs; sub-divisions of the Baseri; Baharlu sub-tribes; sub-divisions of the Qashqai; sub-divisions of the Mamassani; table of supplies and transport.
