Content

This bundle consists of summaries, and partial transcripts, of secret letters received from HM Minister to Persia, Charles Augustus Murray (15-21 November 1855, Numbers 82-87). The amount of detail for each entry therefore varies.

The central topic is a dispute between Murray and Mirza Aqa Khan-e Nuri (Persian Grand Vizier, Sadr-i-A'zam) over the envoy's attempt to employ Mirza Hashim Khan as a news writer The lowest of the four classes into which East India Company civil servants were divided. A Writer’s duties originally consisted mostly of copying documents and book-keeping. at the British mission, the subsequent striking of the British flag, and the withdrawal of the mission from Tehran. The summaries also contain news reports from Bokhara, Cabool [Kabul], and Herat.
