Hahl said that he had done all he could and that the matter
was n ° longer in his hands.* He was leaving that day for Ms
headquarters. He continued saying that if General Townsherd
would hand over all fire-arms without destroying them he
would promise not to use them against the British army and
that such an arrangement would exercise a considerable
influence towards a rapprochement between the two nations
which was as much desired by Turkey as by Great Britain 1
