The correspondence largely consists of: correspondence between the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The file includes correspondence regarding: the granting to King Hussain of a subsidy of £125,000 a month for four months; a request from Sherif Abdullah [Shereef Abdallah] for a further grant of £10,000 to assist him in his dealings with the tribes to the north of Hedjaz; and the Secretary of State for India being unable to advise his Council to agree to any payment for these grants as charges on Indian revenues ‘for political reasons’.
