September 3934, on the subject of the post of Assistant
Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Bahrain. The poet wae originally sanctioned
for 6 month* which expired last month, and was then in the
communication referred to above sanctioned for another 6 j
months, i.e. until May 1935.
2. The experience which we have had of this new post
has shown that under present day conditions at Bahrain it is
absolutely essential to the efficient conduct not only of the
political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. there, but of affairs at *atar and the
Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. . In the last five years the importance of
Bahrain, and of the volume and variety of the work of its
olitical Agent has increased out of all knowledge. lharc
are now multitudinous ^estions connected with Oil - the
Bahrain ietroleum Company is now in full swing there, with
the Civil Air Route - Bahrain is an important station on the
Civil Air Route to India, with the Royal Air Force - who
have recently made a considerable purchase of land there,
with the Kavy - who have done likewise, with Ibn Saud - the
thorny matter of transit dues for example, with the prospects
of British trade - Bahrain is the largest port in the dull
with the exception of Basrah and fcohammerah, with ■ ersia -
the ill-treatment of Bahrainis in that country, and so forth,
in addition to these special problems the .olitical Agent
has to keep an aye on, and advise the Resident on the
activities of the Bahrain Government« Law and Order, folice
