The stony bed of the ravine is 30' wide ;
the gradient down it is easy.

side of the ravine, which is covered with
boulders up to 1' in diameter The
country here, like that about Ardal and
Chig
akhor, is composed of hills separated by broad
valleys (see page 28?) ; the soil, a gravelly
clay,
is fertile.

easily excavated out of the gravelly hill

A wood path. 3' to 6' wide, leads down the valley, which is about one mile broad, with a
hilly bottom ; its soil is very fertile : its stream, 8' wide at its head, soon increases to 20' and

on either hand have serrated edges of rock ; below the grey limestone rock are undulations

Report marked strictly confidential, prepared in the Intelligence Branch of the Quarter Master General’s Department in India, by the Assistant Quarter Master General, Major and Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel Mark Sever Bell, Royal Engineers. The volume was published by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, 1885.

  • part II, a detailed account of southwest Persia, compiled from Sever’s own observations and other available sources
  • part III, commercial considerations. A further section in this chapter on strategic observations, which is mentioned on the contents page and marked as secret, is not present in the volume
  • part IV, detailed road reports
  • appendix A, road reports, Isfahan to Shústar [Shūshtar], Shústar to Shíráz [Shīrāz], compiled in 1881 by Captain Henry Lake Wells, Assistant Director of Persian Telegraphs, with additional annotations by Bell
