This bundle consists of summaries, and partial transcripts, of secret letters received from both the President in Council (2 June 1855, Numbers 33-35) and the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. (9 June 1855, Numbers 43-45). The amount of detail for each entry therefore varies.
The letters from the President in Council (folios 13-15r) consist of updates on Afghanistan, Punjab, the progress of the Nepalese army against Thibet [Tibet], and the dispute between Gulab Singh (Maharaja of Cashmere [Kashmir]) and his nephew Raja King Jowahir Singh.
The section from Bombay (folio 15v) contains only very brief updates on Aden, Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. , and Persia.
