Quitting the Baghistan or Zerees gardens, we went more or less across
country, bagging the Saidi range on the Jeft and keeping the Kaleb Dukhter-
h>rts on the right, through cultivated ground till 1-60 miles, where the Takht-i-
Darya Kuli Beg is passed on the left and we enter on the plain. Passim* the
Bagn-i-B liram ibai at P785 miles, a track from Kerman to Sar-i-Asia is
crossed, and the mam road from Kerman to Mahun is joined at 2 50 where
t.iere is a coffee house. The country is now sandy with drifts on tim rmbt.
Lying 2 miles off to the left, the large gardens of Sar-i-Asia are noted° at
2 90 miles, and at 4-218 the small hamlet of Kojgeen is seen on the same side.
Continuing through sandy soil, with sand drifts on the right and open ground
on the left, a mud hut with sweet water is passed at 9-035 on the rmht The
large village of Jupar, which nestles the range of that name, fs seen at
10-O2o mdes, about 12 miles to the right. Gradually ascending over sandy
soil, with small drifts, the road leaves the hamlet of Last Gird at 12-25 miles
2 miles to the left, while at 15-80 the sand drifts end and the ground is fallow
on both sides,. The large villages of Kinaristan and Langar, lying about
2 miles to the right, are respectively passed at 1675 and 18 miles. The Mahun
gardens begin at 18-43 miles, and we follow a dry torrent bed, very stonv with
gardens on both sides. This rough going continues till we reach the houses at
19 miles, and a little further on the shrine is passed 5 yards to the left From
here we went up to the Firmau Firma’s garden, which lies just' 3 miles due
south ot the surine arid close to a small range in front of Jupar. Road level
and open to wheels tnrougnout, and has been driven over.

itrom the Jnrman Firma’s garden, I went down again to the shrine in
Manun and started the wheel from there, continuing up the torrent bed we had
entered on the previous march and crossed a stream of beautiful clear water at
lb miles Ibis stream we kept on our right for the next 4'965 miles, when
it crossed to the left, and at 7135 disappeared into a line of Kanats. The
•Malum gardens end at J mile, and the first mile marks a mill close to the left
V6 are a stony road, wnich steadily ascends the valley between the two
great ranges of Sufah ou the left and Jupar on th. right and’Is about 10 ^78,
wide at this point, contracting as we pr .ceed. The second mile is marked bv a
•ohtary tree 30 yards to the right, and at 2-51 the stones are less, and the road
improves. A track joins in on the right rear at 5 miles from the Hanaka-
Mahun road Continuing in a south-easterly direction, we kept to the left of
* low sand-stone hill which starts at 6-50 miles, and we skirt this till 9-84 miles
when it ends and the valley again widens out. At 7'40, a path strikes oil to

Report by William King Wood, Assistant Superintendent, Indo-European Telegraph Department. Printed at the Commissioner's Press, Karachi, 1899. The report is an investigation of proposed routes for the Central Persia Telegraph Line and is based on a journey undertaken by the author from Shiraz to Gwadur [Gwadar] between September 1898 and March 1899.
The report is divided into sections, as follows: Kashan to Yezd; Yezd to Kerman; Kerman to Bam; Bam to Regan; Regan to Pahra. Each section includes a description of the track followed, gazetteer, notes on sites for telegraphic offices, and a general summary. Additional descriptions are given for a number of alternative routes and routes investigated but considered unsuitable. At the rear of the volume are six appendices giving information on distances, costs, trade, water quality, and a glossary.
Folio 5 is a map of the route taken and the proposed telegraph line.
