In 1921 I established a firm for the manufacture of ice in
Bahrein in partnership with Sheikh Ahmed Ebn Sheikh Eissa A1
Khalife, the present Governor of Bahrein, and for six years
the business was carred on by my legal representative. At
the expiration of this oeriod Sheikh Ahmed did not wish to
continue the oartnership, and the

was managed for 3 years,
from 1927 to 1929 on my behalf. On 29 May Sheikh Ahmed asked me
to hand the

over to the Municipality, to which I did not
agree. He therefore called upon the British authorities to see
that his request was complied with. I again was not prepared to
agree to this. As the

is equipped with two sets of
ice manufacturing machines, an agreement was reached at the
British High Commissioner^ office that Sheikh Ahmed should take
over one of the sets, and that I should take over the other, and
the partnership was accordingly dissolved in that way. Both
uarties concerned, viz. Sheikh Ahmed and my legal representative
accepted and signed the agreement at the High Commissioner’s
office. On the following day three persons from the Bahrein
Municipality, together with an engineer from the Telegraph Office,
came on behalf of Sheikh Ahmed to divide the

did not carry this out on the pretext that the time at their
disposal was too short to permit of the necessary equipment of
the works, and suggested instead that Sheikh Ahmed should take his
share after the summer season.

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.
The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
