made certain counter proposals for the purchase of his share,
which were not accentahle to him. In July 1930 he wrote to me
under date of 29 July, that the Municipality was prepared to
purchase his share for Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. 10,CC0, and to give him a monopoly
for a period of 5 years, or that I could purchase his share for
the same amount hut without the monoooly. He asked me to reply
to him within 10 days, otherwise he would sell it. I received
this letter on 6th August and on the same day I wired to him that
I was orepared to "buy his share at the price offered "by the
Municipality. The day he wrote that letter was July 29th. The
next day, viz, July 30th, he took the keys of the factory An East India Company trading post. from
my legal representative and handed them over to the Municipality.
The latter took over the works and. proceeded v/ith the manufacture
of ice without my knowledge and consent. Sheikh Ahmed had
received my wire on the 7th or 8th August, and had informed my
representative that my reply was too days late, and that he had
sold the factory An East India Company trading post. to the Municipality.
My representative and myself have "been in correspondence
with the British High Commissioner in Bahrein and also Sheikh
Ahmed. The latter has not replied to any of my letters.
The Municipality claimed that they had obtained the monopoly
for five years from the Government, and that my share was
inoperative. The High Commissioner replied that I could no
longer carry on with the work of the factory An East India Company trading post. , as Sheikh
Ahmed, the Governor, had sold his share to the Municipality
and had granted them the monopoly.
Prom August 1930 up to the present no tangible result
has accrued.

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.

The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
