triokss he had at firat addreaaed a letter to Yueuf Khonjl
making to him a proposition to buy his shares in the
business under certain arbitrary conditions while fixing
a time-limit of 10 days. Then, notwithstanding the fact
that Yusuf Khenji had agreed telegraphically to the
proposal made by the Sheikh, the latter had handed over
to the Municipality his share in the business with the
monopoly right for 5 years with the intention of making
Yu r uf 1 s share useless. The Municipality had, thereupon,
forcibly taken possession of the plant immediately.
The British Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. has, in reply to the protest
made by Yusuf's attorney against such arbitrary conduct,
had recourse to some ridiculous and weak statements,
saying, for instance, that if the monopoly right has been
granted to the Municipality, Yusuf Lutfali Bhonji can
remove his share of the machine to another island.
Further, he (the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. ) has, in support of the
action taken by the Sheikh in selling his share to the
Municipality, while being fully conscious of the real
state of affairs, written that Yusuf had been invited
to buy Sheikh Mamed's share, but he did not take
advantage of the offer!!
I should, therefore, record my Government's
protest and surprise, along with a aeries of the former
protests, at thisaaort of Illegal and arbitrary acts which
are being perpetrated in Bahrein with the assistance and
connivance of the British officials there.
I avail myself of the opportunity, etc..

About this item

Content

This file contains papers relating to a legal dispute between Yusuf Lutfally Khunji and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain. The case concerns a joint venture between the aforementioned parties to set up and operate an ice-making plant in Bahrain at a spring owned by Mr. Khunji in 1922. Following the expiration of a five year monopoly on the manufacture and sale of ice in Bahrain, the two parties fell into a dispute on the plant.

The majority of the papers consist of legal correspondence between Mr Khunji's lawyers in Manchester and either the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Bahrain or the Financial Advisor to the Ruler of Bahrain, Charles Dalrymple Belgrave. Of note, however, are letters of intervention by the Foreign Minister of Iran through the Persian Legation in London, protesting the treatment of a Persian subject in British protected territory.
