to be watered at the wells reserved for drinking purposes, the majority of
travellers taking out drinking water are so careless that they wash their dirty
water bags close to the well and let the washings run down into the well which
pollute the water. Besides this every time there is a strong wind it blows down
large quntities of sand, earth, and filth into the well which, if not cleared out
frequently, also defile the water.
A stone platform about three feet high built round the mouth of the well
with sides sloping down to the ground and a wooden covering on the top of
the well would remedy all these defects.

144. Butik (Levy post).
Time taken by laden camels, 8J hours.
Distance, 16 miles.
Koad, sandy, but not bad.
Water, good, from two wells.
Firewood and camel-grazing procurable, but no supplies.
(a) A hot wind was blowing to-day
and heat in the afternoon was intolerable.
Heat intolerable at Butik.
(b) There is a levy post here of two

These men are under Kadkhuda Shah Sowar In the East India Company army and later Indian Army, an ordinary native cavalryman or mounted cavalryman. Hasanzai of Amri, who is
Chief of the Khasadars of Chah-i-Sandan and Miroi also. He came and offered
his readiness to assist me, if necessary; but I did not require his services.

145. Chdh Sanddn (Levy post).
Time taken by laden camels, 7f hours.
Distance, 16 miles.
Water, good, from a well about 6 feet deep in rock.
Fire-wood and camel-grazing procurable, but no supplies.
Road between Butik and Chah Sandan. .. ^ descended gradually all
the way to the south-east.
(5) The region of sand which had begun at Saindak ended about a mile

to the camels.

(d) The levy post here is held by two Khasadars and the building consists
of two rooms built of stone in a walled
enclosure.
