had given both from his personal knowledge, and after verification
from sources other than the Bahraini (Syed Shubbar), who was
interrogated in my presence.
As previously explained, some of the gardens are rented on
a cash basis and some for payments in kind - dates, firewood,
lucerne, etc ., and the aggregate values are as already reported.
In all probability Shaikh Sir Isa bin Ali has no personal
knowledge whatever of the gardens from which he derives an in
come. It has always been his custom to hand over the manage
ment of such affairs to a head fidawi , the person generally now
employed by him being one Syed Hashim. Whether Shaikh Isa
ever gets the full benefit of his income is a matter on which I
should not care to speculate.
Moreover, in all probability Shaikh Isa never actually
receives any cash, it being his custom to have all receipts
paid over to some nominee (for some years it has been Ali bin
Abdulla -- father of the notorious Jasim A1 Chirawi) on whom he
draws as occasion demands. ,

As regards the solicitors’ remarks on how a sum of money
once paid to Shaikh Isa’s account could have been withdrawn with
out his knowledge, and that as far as is known Shaikh Isa has
x*ji no knowledge of any monies having been placed to his account,
the facts are as follows :-
As stated in your telegram No. 1181 of November 13th the
allowance was for many months paid into a M fund in the name of
Shaikh Isa. M It was not paid into Shaikh Isa’s account
because he had no account at the Bank, and he resolutely
declined to sign the necessary document to open an account,
and to operate on the funds at his disposal.
Thinking that he might be prejudiced against taking mone^
from the Bank, both Shaikh Hamad and Shaikh Abdulla begged him to
intimate how, or to whom, he would like the money paid for his
benefit. He declared that under no circumstances would he
accept any money whatsoever from the State funds. So far
from his having no knowledge of the money being available,
