I am informed that Captain Mountain, 5th-10th Baluchis, would be very
suitable officer if he would accept post. If he would be suggested he might
be offered it for one year in case Captain proved too expensive. But failing
him any suitable Lieut, over 7 years would do and could be offered it for two
years. I regard it of the greatest importance to get a man quickly and
Levies under training at Bahrein at once, more especially as I hear that
there is some chance of Alban being given an appointment in India.

With reference to your interview with Mr. Howell a short while ago, I
am to say that the Bahrein State are in temporary need of an Indian Revenue
Surveyor with revenue or tapu experience in Iraq on a salary of Rs. 400 per
mensem (Serial No. 260). The area to be surveyed is not very large (about
18 square miles) and consists in the main of date gardens and Lucern fields.
It is not yet known how long the work will take, and the detailed terms of
employment, which must be embodied in a formal contract, have yet to be
settled. Meanwhile will you please say whether you wish to be considered
for the appointment, and if so the date by which it would be possible for
you to proceed to Bahrein.
I am to add that in the event of your accepting the appointment it will
be necessary for you to arrange for a Survey party to accompany you to
Bahrein and advise as to its strength.
