we have never acknowledged their position de lure (vide
correspondence end ng with paragraph^ of yoar predecessor^

Minister for foreign Affairs, forwarded to me under Tehran
Printed letter No.234 xf 21st November 1931). If we permit
the Island to remain in the possession of the Iranian Govern
ment the least the latter can do is to prevent incidents of
the nature reported &b >ve recurring. As you will see the
representative of the Director of Customs on Girri Island did
nothing to help Calim and what adds to the responsibility of
the Iranian Government is that - vide paragraph 3 above - the
arrangement come to as to the debt between * Ubaid and the
subject of the Shaikh of as al /haimah was made uncier
Iranian authority.
5. The Shaikh of as al ilhaimah has not unnaturally sent
in a very strong protest to me, hinting that if we cannot
obtain redress for him he will be unable to prevent his people 1
taking the law into their own hands. 1 should think that this
eventuality is far from unlikely. I venture to suggest
therefore that the Iranian Government should be urged to
arrange for the return of the boat and for some compensation
to be paid by the culprits to S&lim. In the meantime with a
view to keeping the Ghaikh and his people from taking
retaliatory action I am informing him that I have reported
the matter to you for representation to the Iranian Government.

The file concerns the claim by the Government of Iran to the island of Sirri [Jazīreh-ye Sīrrī], which was occupied by the Iranian customs authorities.
The issue arose following the seizure by inhabitants of the island of a dhow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. from Ras al Khaimah. The incident produced a protest by the British Legation, Tehran to the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, in which the British Government, while acknowledging Iran's de facto occupation of the island, denied any acceptance of Iran's de jure sovereignty there. In response, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted both Iran's de facto and de jure sovereignty. The correspondence shows that following this, the Foreign Office decided against reiterating the British position in regard to sovereignty over the island. The issue of the boat that had been seized was amicably settled (folio 6).
The file also contains copies of earlier correspondence dated November-December 1931.
