1178. On the 9th, His Highness the Sultan left for Sohar on board his yacht Local Officials,
< Nur-el-Bahx ”, returning on the 13th.
On the 14th, Saiyid Taimur proceeded to Sur on board the <£ Nur-el-Bahr ”
and returned to Maskat on the 16th. His visit was in connection with the P^y -
ir.ent of zikat, about which there had been some trouble between the Wali of Sur
and the Janeiba tribesmen.
1179. On the 19th, Saiyid Nadir left for Ismaili. He was deputed to bring the
Shaikhs of the Sur tribe to Maskat, whose men had fired on the American Consul
and his party {vide paragraph 1098) and who had refused to come to Maskat.
Saiyid Nadir remained away in the interior till the close of the month inducing the
Shaikhs to proceed to Maskat.
1180. Soon after Saiyid Nadir’s departure, 40 men of the Bani bu Hassan, who
arrived in Maskat, were commandeered to proceed and join Saiyid Nadir.
1181. On the 26th His Highness, on learning of the attempt made on the life
for His Excellency the Viceroy at Delhi, despatched the following telegram to His
Excellency the Viceroy :•—
“ I Rave this moment heard with unfeigned horror of dastardly attempt on
life of Your Excellency. I rejoice at providential escape, trust that
your wounds are not severe and beg to tender my sincere sympathy
to Lady Hardinge, who must have suffered terribly.”
1182. On the 28th, the following reply was received from the Private Secretary
to the Viceroy
“ His Excellency sends his warm thanks to Your Highness for your kind
message of sympathy, he is doing well.”
1183. Saiyid Taimur handed over to the superintendent of the Warehouse a Arms Traffic,
rifle, which he confiscated from an Arab and which had been bought from a French
merchant.
