European Telegraph Department).
(7) In addition to the above, there are some 3,700 miles
of Persian telegraph lines (see map), worked by native
staffs. They all consist of single wires on wooden poles.
Postal In 1877 Persia joined the International Postal
system. Union. There now exists between Persia and other
countries :—
( 1 ) A bi-weekly service (weekly in winter) via
Kussia (either by the Resht-Baku Caspian
route, or overland by the Tabriz-Tiflis route).
London to Teheran 16 days.
(2) A bi-weekly service from Teheran to London via
Bushire and Bombay in 40 days.
(3) A tri-weekly service between Meshed and
Askhabad.
^4) A Parcel Post with Europe via Askhabad and
Russia.
The usual mode of conveying mails on inland lines is
in saddle-bags carried by horses, and letters and parcels
frequently suffer from wet and want of care in packing,
but, since the recent reorganisation of the postal system
by Belgian officials, fourgons have been substituted
wherever possible. These now run between Teheran and
the following places :—Meshed, Isfahan, Kumishah, Ker
man, Zinjan, Resht and Hamadan; and also on the Julfa-
Tabriz and Meshed-Askhabad roads. Except in winter,
they are found preferable to pack-horses.
