Military
ranks and
pay-
* The apparent low rate of pay in the higher rank of the
Cossack Brigade as compared with that in other branches may he
accounted for by the fact that pay is issued in the former case
regularly, and in the latter case only when the troops are under
arms, and even then frequently in arrears.
In addition to the above rates of pay, both officers Allow
and men receive jireh or ration -allowance in lieu <>t
rations in kind. This varies between about 110 J. a year
for a Sartip and 35s. a year tor a Sarbaz.
Lodging allowance (khanevmreK) is also issued to the
rank and tile, whether actually under arms or on halt-pay.
It is equivalent to about 2os. a year.
Officers, Cossacks, and irregular cavalry (when
embodied with regulars) receive alikh or horse-allowance
(10a'. to 12a. per mensem).
