I am directed to refer to Colonel Barrett’s letter No.472-S.,
dated the 26th September 1929 (copy sent with Foreign Secretary’s
letter No.114—M., dated the 21st November 1929) and to enclose a
copy of the reply to Colonel Barrett’s letter which has been sent
to the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .
2. The Government of India are clearly not in a position to
endorse with authority the views expressed by Colonel Barrett in
regard to the right of search for arms of Iraqi and Nejdi vessels
by His Majesty’s ships of war, and even if they were, they are
very doubtful whether they could accept any of his contentions /
except his decision against any right of search of Nejdi vessels
in Nejdi waters.
3. The Government of India are taking steps to ascertain the
views of His Excellency the Naval Commander-in-Chief, East Indies
Station, as to the preparation by the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. and the
Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. in consultation of a
revised appendix to the East Indies Station Order Book and will
address you further on this subject in due course.
