active interest in Muscat of the French
Government has declined to negligible dimensions,
the existence of her Treaty with Muscat of lb44
and of the Anglo-French Declaration of 1862,
would put her in a position to demand a quid pro
quo from His Majesty’s Government in return for
acquiescence in our protectorate which we
might find it difficult to offer. The
negotiations with France of 1912-14 (in
