32. The Government of India are definitely of opinion that the alienation
of the*Arab Protectorates would be highly impolitic from the point of view
of His Majesty’s Government,! and, in connection with the deliberations
of the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
Sub-Committee, have expressed the viowj that the<-
maintenance of the independence of the Sheikhdoms (absorption of which
by Ibn Sand or his successor might easily lead to a speedy relapse of the
Gulf into the chaos from which it has been rescued^ with so.much difficulty)
is essential. Here, as in the case of 1 lahrem, Ivoweit and Muscat, the^
consider that so long as Arab opinion is not alienated by an attempt at
undue Westernisation, our present veiled protectorate suffices not only against
European encroachment, but against the encroachments of the Wahabi State..
That protectorate can, they remark, at need be more explicitly asserted.
