5. I am very sorry that we should
be losing Johnston’s services in
the
Persian Gulf
The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
at a time when he
was apparently beginning to settle

in well. I am glad that in
Briscoe you have been able to find
a man who not only has previous
experience of the Gulf and talks
Persian and Arabic, but who is
sufficiently young ’to enable us to
hope that he will hold tne
appointment for the full term.
Barrett, from his record, seems
very well qualified to hold the
acting appointment.
The Admiralty are concerned
at Johnston’s resignation, on the
ground that he has established
particularly good relations with
the sailors in the Gulf. This is
no doubt the result of the hint
on the subject which you gave him.
It is, however, of so much importan
to keep things running smoothly
that I would like to suggest for
your consideration that you might
think it possible to convey a
similar hint both to Barrett and to
Briscoe. If, as I hope, I see
