My dear Prior,
It may be ueeful if I send you a brief account of what
we have been doing in Bahrain since the war started*
2* Our first object was to ensure that a defence plan
against sabotage was put into effect# Working on the lines
of the Air Officer Commanding* a "Appreciation regarding the
Defence of Bahrain” we made various preparations before war
began and the plan went into operation about two hours after
we had heard of the declaration of war# We found that the
recommended plan would not quite work so far as the Oil Com
pany* s premises were concerned, and though the Company put a
great many men on the task to begin with, inevitably they soon
began to want them back# Also after the first flush of enthu
siasm had faded, many of the Europeans and Americans engaged
on kefinery and Field protection began to get bored, to argue
about the effectiveness of our plans,* and in the absence of
Black, the Chief Local Representative (who had been called up
for Naval Control Service work in Basra), the Amarican heads
of the Company here found themselves up against a great ;nany
personnel difficulties# There were a certain number of I^jglish-
men who were convinced that they alone knew how to win the war
and were determined to show them at home exactly how to do it;
