ITo European trader could at present go inland owing to the disturbed
state of the country.
Total trade, —The total volume of trade during the year has amounted to
Rs. 79,84,313 as against Rs. 48,58,733 of the previous year showing an increase
of Rs. 31,25,580 on last year’s figures. The above figures include the figures
of the buggalow Large trading vessel. borne trade which amounted to Rs. 43,79,771 and represent*
the respectable increase of Rs.. 28,13,816 on last year’s figures. This is due
to the fact that steamship services had been largely utilised by Government in
connection with the war.

against Rs. 24,99,755 last year slowing an increase of Rs. 18,49,716 over la4
year’s figures or 74 per cent. This amount includes Rs. 27,46,32* worth
imports carried hy the buggalow Large trading vessel. borne traffic.
The main imports are rice, coffee and cotton goods which are responsible for
Rs. 36,06,903 of the whole total: sugar, wheat, wheat flour are also largely
imported. ° J
Rice is a main staph* of diet and as it is little grown in the country it
always constitutes the main import. 3 he Omani exchanges his chief product
of dates for rice, coffee and cotton goods from India.
America and Japan are serious compititors in piece sroods trade though all
goods are shown as imported from India whence they are shipped to Muscat.
Expo r ts. To'al expots for the ye : r under report amounted to
Rs. 36,34,842 which includes Rs. 15,45,586 worth exports carried bv the
buggnlow traffic, as against Rs. 23,58,978 last year showing an increase of
Rs. 1 ,75,864 over last year’s figures or 34 per cent.
Dry and wet dates .of the value of Rs. 1^,37,363 were erported during the
year under report. Of this total date export, the share earritd by sailing-craft
amounts to Rs. 12,13,630. The export of wet dates to United States of America
amounted to Rs. 27,075 and to India Rs. 3,15,261.

The volume contains copies of the annual trade report on the trade and commerce of Muscat [Muscat and Oman] for the years 1911-12 to 1923-24 inclusive (except 1917-18 and 1920-21). The reports were prepared by the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and HBM's Consul, Muscat, and forwarded to the Government of India.

Each report includes an introduction giving general information concerning the state, and summaries of imports and exports; statistical tables of imports and exports, subdivided into principal commodities, and countries imported from/exported to; and returns of shipping. Principal imports include arms and ammunition, cereals, paints and colours, precious stones and metals, provisions, textile fabrics, tobacco, and miscellaneous; principal exports include cereals, fish, fruits, paints and colours, provisions, cotton goods, tobacco, and miscellaneous. The reports show some manuscript annotations, and the volume also contains some minutes and correspondence.

The file includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the rear to the front of the volume. The subject 234 (Muscat Trade Reports) consists of one volume only.
