August. The Saiyid expressed surprise at the
Minister’s unsympathetic attitude towards him
in regard to his recent crusade against the
Belgian Customs Administration. hen Sir A.
Hardinge endeavoured to explain the difference
between the actual duties fixed in the
Customs tariff and the extra charges as
regards ware-house, storage, &c., the Saiyid
became greatly excited in regard to M. Naus,
exclaiming—“By your head, and by the
salt of the British Government, I swear I
will not rest until I have had him killed
The Saiyid said that Mirza Kazim, Khorasani,
the only one of the Great Ulema of Nejef, who
had at first disapproved of the campaign
against the Belgian Customs Administration,
bad now withdrawn his opposition, and was
prepared to support it. Sir A. Hardinge
considers that the agitation against the Belgian
Customs, which has slumbered at Tehran,
though not entirely in the provinces, since
the Shah’s departure, will be revived after His
Majesty’s return, especially if the Ain-ed-
Dowleh remains in office.
