confined at Ali Khel. Until the Havildar Custodian; police sergeant; jail or prison guard. is
released, the real facts of the case cannot be
ascertained : the men who escaped have been
placed under arrest.
On the 21st July, when some villagers of
Lalmai were grazing their flocks in the hills
on the border, a heavy storm came on, and the
villagers drove their sheep for shelter under
a cliff, which is in Afghan territory. The
officer in charge of the Amir’s post noticing
what had occurred, sent out some men and
captured the sheep. The owners, however,
managed to effect the release of the animals
by going in person and petitioning the officer
in charge of the post.
On the night of the 1st August, a daring
raid was made by a gang of 50 or 60 Para
Chamkannis,—the same gang as was con
cerned in the Samir raid (see Journal for
January),—upon the Turi hamlet of Mahmud
Killi, about nine miles from Parachinar. The
attack was made at midnight, and the raiders*
scaling the village walls by means of hastily
constructed ladders, fell upon the few men
who were in the village while they were asleep*
and slashed them with heavy Afghan knives.
Only the Malik and his brother managed to
escape; the raiders seized the Malik’s wife,
her two children, and a daughter of the Malik’s
brother, and taking such portable property as

withholding of allowances to bring them to
their senses, failing which it will, it is feared,
be necessary to take forcible measures to
obtain satisfaction for this absolutely unpro

against the tribe (see last few Journals). The
tribal jirga has come in, and there is still a
chance of an amicable settlement, as the
majority of the Maliks are said to be anxious
to make reparation, and may succeed in carry
ing the tribe with them as a whole.
On the 8th August, when a number of
Turis of Ahmedzai were cutting firewood in
the hills, they w’ere attacked by a raiding
gang of Jajis from Afghan territory, and five
mules and two donkeys were carried off.
On the 23rd August, a Militia patrol
between Ibrahimzai and Sadda shot and
arrested an armed trans-border thief, who
first fired upon them. This man turned out
to be one Gul Muhammad, a Mastu Khel
Gara Massozai, and a relative of Malik Gulab
Shah, and has been sent to the Sadda
Hospital. On the 26th August, a large number
of Mastu Khel Maliks, with 70 armed followers,
arrived at Sadda, swearing vengeance on the
