granted during the war to the King of the Hedjaz were
admittedly most extravagantly administered by him and
that there is no evidence that the present amount of
Rs.250,000 a month either represents the minimum re
quired for purposes essential to British policy or
that the payment if made will be devoted to those
purposes. The officer despatched to enquire into
this aspect of the matter appears to have been re
fused any facilities for his enquiry a fact which
appears to Them to furnish an additional reason, if
one were required, for refusing to continue the suosidy*
My Lords are not clear that continuance of
any subsidy can be justified, even when the question of
policy has been settled. But in any event a drastic
reduction of the amount seems to be indicated.
