On the 1st August 1895 a Protectorate Treaty (No. XLIII) was con
cluded with the lower Yafai.
In 1899 Sultan Bubakr bin Saif died. He was succeeded by Sultan
Abdulla bin Mohsin.
In 1902 the Fadthli Sultan established a new customs post at
Zanzibar and levied dues on Yafai Kafilahs. The Yafai retaliated by
cuttino- oft the water-supply from the Nazia channel. The Fadthlis
then attacked A1 Husn and A1 Rawa. In 1903 the Resident endeavoured
to effect a settlement, but the Yafai Sultan refused to attend the con
ference. In 1904 the Fadthlis attacked Raha and Khanfur, and for a
long time no settlement was reached; while relations with the lower
Yafai Sultan continued strained, partly owing to his dissatisfaction with
the position accorded to certain sections of the upper Yafai, over whom
he is inclined to assert a claim to general suzerainty, and partly to his
dissatisfaction with the rank and precedence assigned to himself.
In 1916 / Sultan Abdulla bin Mohsin died. He was succeeded by
his cousin, Sultan Mohsin bin Ali. This Chief renewed friendly rela
tions with the Aden Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. , to which he paid periodical visits.
In 1925 Sultan Mohsin bin Ali died and was succeeded by his son,
Sultan Aidrus bin Mohsin bin Ali. This Chief has established his per
sonal authority over the whole of the Lower Yafai clans and has arranged
with his neighbour, the Fadthli, a truce with a view to the settlemen
of their longstanding dispute over the irrigation water of the Nazia
channel. Sultan Aidrus’s readiness to lay aside this ancient feud is in
marked contrast to the irreconcilable attitude maintained by his father.
In November l<*>5/Major M. C. Lake was sent on a special Mission
to Lower and Upper Yafai. Sultan Aidrus accorded him a warm wel
come and gave him every assistance in his journey.
The population of lower Yafai is estimated at 70,000 and the gross
