Sultan ’Alimad bin Saleh, Mohsin’s brother, as a political prisoner. The

who had proved himself a weak and inefficient ruler and had gained the

Mokalla On the occasion of Sultan Mohsin’s recognition the oppor-
tunity was taken to reaffirm with him the Protectorate Treaty of
1895 (see No. LXIV).
The ar-Sultan Saleh bin Abdulla quarrelled with Sultan Mohsin in
Saleh over his share in the port dues of Balahaf, and in 1900 asked
Resident to interfere on his behalf/which the latter declined to do.
Sultan Nasir bin Saleh of Habban in the same year made overtures
for a separate treaty, but these were not accepted.
In 1910 an Agreement (Appendix No. Ill) was concluded between
Sultan Mohsif bin Saleh and Sultan Ghalib bin Omar, the Haiti, by
which the former agreed to allow the latter to use his territory ior the
passage of troops and warlike materials, and for commercial purposes.
It has, however, never been referred to by either party and is now
considered a dead letter.
Sultan Mohsin died in January 1919 and was succeeded by iis
younger son, Ali bin Mohsin bin Saleh, to whom the Government
India continued the monthly stipend of 30 dollars paid to his fathei.
(15) The Kathiri.
The country inhabited by this tribe was formerly extensive, reaching
from the Aulaki districts on the west to the Mahn tnbe on the eas and
including the seaports of Mokalla and Shehr. Civil wars led to the
interference of the Yafai, and much of the Kath.r, territory came unde
the sway of the Kasadi and Haiti, the Kathiri now possessing no seaport

'At the end of 1883 Sultan Abdulla bin Saleh, one of the Hath
Chiefs visited the Resident at Aden. His principal object was o ascer
tain what attitude the British Government would maintain in the evem
of the Kathiri attacking the Haiti with a view to repossessing themselves
. ,, rts 0 j- shehr and Mokalla. Abdulla bin Saleh also visited
ZanzibaiWwith intent to intrigue with the er-Nakib of Mokalla, from
whom, however, he failed to obtain any mater.al assistance.
