EXTRACT FRQk LETTER FROM SIR R. GRAHAM TO SIR R* v/IHGATE
Dated FOREIGN OFFICE Jan. 19.
TT Uy dear General
Hardinge lias relinquished his work here and
has handed over to me. He is in the country taking a few
days rest "before he goes to Paris. I am therefore answer-
-ing your letter of December 7th, Private, at his request.

if not others of the Ministers and then have
come to see you as a Deputation without your having any
previous knowledge of the objects and aims of their visit.

that the agitators made great capital out of having been
received by you and obtained signatures to their petition
in the Provinces on the ground that their movement had the
approval of the

. I feel sure that had you been
previously warned as to the nature of their visit and the
absurd proposals they meant to put forward you would have
been chary of receiving them as a deputation. I can
however assure you that H.M.G* continue to have every con-
-fidence in your skill and judgment and we are all looking
forward greatly to seeing you over here and discussing
