elsewhere than here. Brunyate is a man great ability. Everyone
is agreed as to that. But he is, however, absolutely loathed out
here by every single person, both European an^ Egyptian. This is
owing to his overbearing manner, and his supreme tactlessness. He
has brought the latter to a fine art. If he had not gone on leave
when he did there is little doubt that attempts would have been made
on his life. This being so, I hope personally that he will not
return. His absence would also make Crawford’s work considerably
easier when he comes out.
I wonder when Cheetham or his successor returns here. When
he does 1 shall be able to leave; not that I want to but, as you
know, I must get back. Cheetham is overdue for promotion, I under
stand, but there is an idea here that he will come back to t^.is
country, and not be promoted until after Lord Milner’s Commission
has sat. Surely it would be better to send a new man out now, so
that he could get into harness before Lord Milner comes out. He
would then be able to carry on the policy of the Commission for some
years, instead of leaving at once for another country, as would be
the case if Cheetham returned.”
