Leaving the Kala Zangir camp and village of All
Sultan, the path traverses thick dwarf oak forest in
a south-east direction skirting the sides of rocky
spurs from the Kala Zangir mountain, the Dasht-
i-Mort lying to the east. At 3 miles turn to the right and cross the small stream of the Shewi
valley which runs from the direction of Bibian, and crossing some low spurs follow and cross a
ravine reaching at 4-|- miles the hamlet of Ahrawan, 12 houses and some cultivation, on the
bank of the Bibian stream Up the stream, 4f miles, are Dushemian, 1 mile, and Bibian,
miles, in trees and cultivation, at the head of the valley. Crossing the stream, the path traverses a
number of wooded spurs, the ravines between draining to the Zimkan river, some holding water;
atO miles a path to Biama diverges half right; cross a valley with some cultivation and at Si
miles ascend to the low pass of Milakabud by easy gradients ; below lies the valley of Biama,
crossing which reach lower Biama at 9 miles ; some cultivation ; at the valley head lies upper
Biama. 2 miles. The path now follows the Baresha stream, which drains Biama, rising under
the mountain of Aftab-i Bars to the west, and crossing it, the small villages of Zaolu lying
down stream J mile, traverses a plateau, and at 11 f miles reaches Binar, 40 houses ; £ mile
to the west is the camp of Slier Khan Sultan, 50 houses; there are various hamlets also
scattered about the level spurs towards the Zimkan river, lying about 4 miles east.
Room for camping ; wood, forage and water abundant; supplies except in winter;
corn reaped end of July. Elevation 5,350 feet.
The path is good throughout and practicable for laien animals; the oak forest, however,
is in parts thick and encroaches on the road. Water, giass, and fuel throughout;supplies in
summer where villages are noted.
5 Gawabua . .1 15 ( 58 ] The path crosses, on leaving Binar, a small stream
! draining east to the Zimkan. and traversing some
| ridges and dividing streams, passes the village of
( Par Bala to the left; at H miles descend into a-
valley with water and cultivation and on the further side cross successive ridges; at 4^ pass
the village of Darwet, | mile to the right, a small stream from it crossing the road. Several
more small valleys are passed, some containing water ; at 7 miles cross a stream and turning
half right np its valley ascend it to 8 miles, parsing Chua Balak to the left on a cultivated
plateau ; then traverse a cultivated valley, reaching at 8f miles the village and hamlets of
Yarwez Sultan. Cross a small stream steeply and passing through oak scrub emerge at 10 miles
above a cultivated valley lying below to the left, turning to and crossing which Bawa is passed
at 11^ miles, the valley being named Kulkul. Descending the stream draining the Kulkul
valley and passing a hamlet of 15 houses, leave the stream, which flows left to the Zimkan;
ascend to a level plateau sloping on the east to the Zirnkan, 1 mile distant and well cultivated,
which traverse to 14J miles when Gawarra comes in sight and is reached at 15 miles.
Elevation 4,970 feet.
Room for camping ; supplies, fuel and forage plentiful. The Zimkan flows immediately
below the town which has 400 houses; its valley is narrow but lined with trees, gardens and
vineyards.
Road throughout good and passable to laden animals ; oak forest continues to 10 miles,
after which cultivation is constant ; fuel, wood and water throughout ; supplies where
villages noted, in summer only, corn being threshed in August.

Government of India publication printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, 1899. The volume contains information on 28 land routes into and within Persia undertaken by Captain E B Burton, 17th Bengal Cavalry, and Captain H B Vaughan, 7th Bengal Infantry.
Each route description includes number of route, distances in miles (intermediate and total), stage numbers and names, precise details of the route, and remarks on road conditions, geography, settlements and peoples encountered, agriculture, access to water, and fuel and forage supply.
The volume includes a preface by Lieutenant-Colonel James Wolfe Murray, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch, Simla, dated 1 March 1899.
At the back of the volume is a map of south-west Persia showing the routes taken (folio 43).
An ink stamp on the front cover records the confidential nature of the publication and that it was being transmitted for the information of His Excellency the Viceroy only.
