PREFACE.
The terms “ Turkistan ” and <l Central Asia
appear sometimes to have been used almost indis
criminately to describe either the whole ol that
immense tract of country to the east of the
Caspian, between Siberia on the north, and Persia,
Afghanistan and Tibet on the south, or merely to
designate separate parts of the same region.
The present Report deals only with Russian
Turkistan, which includes the five Russian
provinces of Trans-Caspia, Samarkand, Ferghana,
Syr Daria, and Semirechia, and the two semi
independent Khanates of Khiva and Bokhara.
The Report has been prepared by Captain
H. H. Dowding, Captain of the General Staff.
