places the amount qf moisture evaporated is largely in
excess of the rainfall.
The inhabitants are partly of Turco-Mongolian, I nth bi-
par tly of Aryan origin. The Kirghiz form 26 per cent, tants.
of the whole population, Sarts 24 per cent., Uzbaks and
Kipchaks 19 per cent., Tajiks per cent., Turkomans
o per cent., Russians 4^ per cent.,* Jews, Gipsies, Ar
menians, &c., 2 per cent. Russian colonisation is being
pushed forward by the Russian Government, and, in
spite of the many drawbacks of soil and climate, villages
consisting almost entirely of Russians have been estab
lished, especially in Semirechia. In 1897 the total
population of Russian Turkistan numbered, approxi
mately, some 8,280,000 souls.
