begun, from Samarkand,* via Karshi, Kerki, and
Kilif, to Termez on the Oxus. In the event of
military operations in Afghanistan, the facilities which
would then be afforded for the movement of troops
from one base to the other, (i.e., from Kuslik to Termez,
or vice versa) will be far from being the least important
factor in the situation created by the completion of this line.
Other projects, for the ultimate extension of the
Russian railway system in Central Asia, may be briellv
alluded to.
The inhabitants of Omsk and merchants of Moscow Tashkend-
have petitioned the Government for the construction of Siberian
a line between Omsk (on the Siberian Railway) and Kailwa y-
Tashkend. M. de Witte, in an official report on the
Siberian and Manchurian lines in 1902, laid consider
able emphasis on the importance of such a line being
constructed as soon as possible. A new field for
colonisation would thus be opened, while the facilities
afforded for the importation of cheap grain, from
Siberia to Central Asia, would make it possible still
further to extend the cultivation of cotton in Turkistau.
A 7 arious projects have been mooted, from time to Other
time, for the connection of Meshed with the Central projected
Asian Railway, by a branch line either from Askhahad J ' nes>
or Dushak (both of which routes, however, appear to be
subject to great, if not insuperable, engineering difficul
ties) ; or from Tejend or Merv, via Sarakhs; both of
which seem to be free from any special technical difficulty.
The advisability of connecting the Merv-Kushk branch
with Meshed by a line running along the Afghan
frontier, and through Pul-i-Khatun, has also been
discussed, as well as another extension of the same branch
line, from Ak Tapa (Panjdch), up the Murghab river,
towards Maruchak.
These various projects, however, appear to be more
or less in abeyance at present, and a more detailed
reference to them here is unnecessary.
* Juma and Kagan (New Bokhara) have both been mentioned
as probable points from which this extension may be constructed.
