Kabul line (13.) From Charjui, where the railway crosses the
of advance. Oxus, up the left bank of the river, via
Kerki, where the river is crossed by ferry
to Kilif, a distance of 132 miles to the
former, and a total of 211 miles to Ivilif.
The road is said to be a good one, running
through cultivation with but little sand.
(</.) From Iverki a route runs across
desert to Ak Tapa. on the Merv-Kushk
railway, a distance of 221 miles, ot which,
however, practically nothing is known.
(6.) From Kerki to Andkhwi over firm
and level ground, 72 miles, and from thence
to Maimana, about 78 miles.
(14.) From Farab on the right bank of the Oxus,
opposite Charjui, by Burdalik to opposite
Kerki (which is reached by ferry), a distance
of 140 miles, and thence to Kilif (74
miles) and Termez; a total distance, between
Farab and Termez, of about 270 miles. I he
road is regularly used for four-wheeled wagon
traffic.
(a.) From Burdalik a route described
as “ good,” but of which little is known,
except that it passes over desert, runs to
Karshi = 81 miles.
(6.) From Burdalik to Bokhara, a distance
of 97 miles. This route passes over desert
tracts, and water supply would be difficult.
(15.) Bokhara to Karshi, a distance of 109 miles.
Fit for wheeled traffic, except in wet weather.
(16.) Kermineh to Karshi = 93 miles. 1 his road
is fit for wheeled traffic, except in wet
weather.
(17.) Kata Kurghan to Karshi = 93 miles. Fit for
wheeled traffic, except in wet weather.
(18.) Samarkand to Karshi = 100 miles. This road
is fit for wheeled traffic, except in wet
weather.
