The imports of Bokhara are in excess of its exports,
and it may be that the same unfavourable balance exists
in the other provinces of Central Asia. Tnrkistan,
however, provides a considerable proportion of the raw
material—cotton, hides and wool—required by Russian
manufacturing industries, while the imports from Russia
of manufactured goods amount to some 11,800 tons
annually. Sugar, timber, iron, kerosene oil, naphtha,
grain, and flour are also imported from Russia.
A large trade is carried on with Persia ; in 1897 the
exports of Turkistan to Persia amounted to about 411,000/.
and the imports to 355,000/. The exports to Afghani
stan for the same year amounted to 53,000/. and the im
ports to 178,000/. There is also a considerable transit
trade in Russian goods through Turkistan to China; in
1897 the exports amounting to 444,000/. and the imports
to some 555,000/.
In connection with the agricultural and other local
resources of Turkistan, it may be noted here that the
completion of the Orenburg-Tashkend Railway will afford
railway communication with the rich corn-growing lands
of Western Siberia. It is anticipated that the increased
facilities for the importation of Siberian wheat in large
(quantities will set free additional areas of land, in
Turkistan, for the cultivation of cotton. The Orenburg-
Tashkend Railway, recently completed, and still more,
a line connecting Tashkend with Omsk, said to be
contemplated (vide page 33), would inake available for
Turkistan the resources of a vastly greater area than its
own. With this view, the following brief summary of
the resources of the four provinces immediately to the
north of Turkistan may perhaps usefully be noted here.
According to the latest data available, the four pro
vinces of Akmolinsk, Semipalatinsk, Turgai, and Uralsk
(the western portion of which will be opened up by the
Orenburg-Tashkend line, and the whole of which would
be tapped by a line from Omsk, on the Siberian Railway,
to Tashkend) contain a population of 2,225,460 natives
and 318,300 Russians. The live stock of the settled
inhabitants, in 1900, amounted to 434,773 horses,
