With reference to your letter, P.2557, of the
3rd ultimo, relative to the adjustment of expenditure
incurred' on-lighting and buoyage in the Persian
Gulf, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Balfour to
state that he has carefully examined the correspond
ence forwarded in your letter but that there still
remain certain points in regard to which he would
be glad to receive further information before
approaching the Lords Commissioners of His
Majesty’s Treasury on the subject.
2. It appears from the figures furnished by
the Government of India that the original estimate
of Twenty thousand pounds furnished in connection
with the Quoin and Tamo Lighthouses has been
exceeded by some Twenty-three thousand pounds
up to March 21st 1917; a further liability
of Fifteen thousand pounds appears to have been
incurred through additional expenditure connected
