INDIA CFFICS,
LONDONM
AIR MAIL.
5th July 1336
My dear Fowle f
Would you please refer to the Foreign Office printed
letter of 6 th June last enclosing a copy of Sir George
Maxwell* 8 letter of the 22nd April to the : oreign Office
(copy sent to you and to the Government of India by mail
of 13th June under ?•£.3947/35) on the subject of slavery
in Arabia. I now enclose a copy of paragraphs 34 f 38 and
39 of the printed report of the League of Nations Slavery
Committee on their last Session held at Geneva last April.
You will see that the Committee have asked lor information
(<*) as to the practical effect which is being given to the
treaties for the suppression of the slave trade concluding
between His Majesty’s Government and the Arab States of the
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , and (b) as to “the conditions of slavery in
the plantations, pearl fisheries and families ,, in the Gulf
States and the Foreign Office have now asked us for our
observations on these paragraphs of the Committee’s report.
I do not think that we need trouble you for a
comprehensive report on these questions since you have
recently told us (vide your demi-official letter No.1504 of
27th June L934) that Biscoe’s two despatches of 19th .*arch
L930 on the slave trade and on domestic slavery are still
up-to-date, and indeed our letter of 9th August i.932 to the
Foreign Office enclosing a copy of a memorandum (based on
Biscoe’s reports) for Lord Lugard, the then British
representative on the Committee of Experts (a copy of which
was sent to Bushire by the mail of 11th August -932 under
No•? .2.3804/32) still seems to cover most of the ground.
