Hamun, known as the Zarala lands, offer an excellent field for Karez enter
prise. I spent a day examining these lands, and found distinct traces of an
old Karez starting Iroin near the foot of the Chappar hills and running to
Zarala. The ruins in the vicinity of these lands show that all the Zarala lands
were once extensively cultivated. I think that a Karez yielding sufficient
water to support a large community could be opened here, and accordingly
would recommend that a sum of Rs. 1,000 he advanced as takavi to Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. AH

36. The development of the district is slowly progressing.
(o) At Charsar, near the Yadgar Chah chauki, I have settled a few
Sasoli. These Sasoli, in spite of their ignorance of all that apper
tains to Karez construction, have yet obtained water sufficient to
irrigate 10 acres of land.
(b) Recent advices from Chagai inform me that the Pudgiaban Karez
has been enlarged and the yield of water doubled.
(c) A small ctakhshani colony, installed at Padag, his opened a small
Karez, which is promising well.
(<7) Kaib Dost Muhammad has undertaken to open Karezes at bofh
Duganau and Dramin. X paid a visit to both of these places in the
course of my cold weather tour, and found that, while there was a
superabundance of water, the lands were poor and situate at a
considerable distance from the water-supply. I have supplied the
Naib with such tools as he required to start the work.
(e) Shahsowar informs me that he has opened a small Karez at Amuri.f
