Maul a Bakhsh’s Route.—Impracticable in wet weather and apparently Na.
only practicable for small bodies at other times.
From Nasratabad to Neh, 95 miles, Neh to Meshed, 409, total 504 miles.
The distance to Meshed via the western routes varies between 490 and
636 miles, or a mean of about 540 miles, which shows that the western lines
are somewhat longer than the eastern ones.
The main lateral communications between the eastern and western groups
of roads are mentioned below :—
Faraiman to Kafir Khan, 24 miles, good road and no difficulties. No. 17.

Turbat-i-Haideri to Karez, 6 stages, 99 miles, road good throughout. No.i/A.
Turbat-i-Haider! to Rui Khaf, 4 stages, 641 miles, good road, no diffi- No.l7B.

Rui Khaf to Jumain, 3 stages, 11 \ miles. No. 17C.
Bajistan to Karat 9 stages, 155§ miles. Route 17C is very similar to No.
stages 4—8 of route 17D, though not following same route exactly; there 17D.
is a good epitome given of the route as a note at end of No. 17D.
Kain to Sharakhs, 5 stages, 90 miles. Road would require some repairs No.
and widening for guns, but on the whole it is a good road. A sufficiency
of water en route for a small force.
Khur to Rui Khal, via Kain, 8 stages and 160^ or 162i miles according No.
to route followed. Some work required on the road to make it passable for 17F.

this staye that the road is good. > .
Tun to Birjand, 5 stages, 107 miles. Nothing is said as to the practi- Na
cability of the road for guns, though it would seem from the description
that some work is necessary to make it passable for wheeled artillery; water
throughout. ^
Tun to Kain, 3 stages, 63 miles. The stage to Bihad is apparently not
very irood.
Birjand to Khun, 2 stages, 53 miles. Road passable for guns No. l/i.
Birjand to Tabas, via Furk, 3 stages, 64 miles. The road is described as No. 17J.
being very bad in stage 2 and would have to be made for guns.
Dumb to Birjand, 6 stages, 86$ miles. This road from description No^
would appear impracticable for guns, but nothing is said about them. \\ ater
good and apparently in fair quantity en route,
Tabas to Kain, vid Gazik, 5 stages, 104 miles. Road bad except first No.
stage. The main lateral communications between the Seistan-Meshed and 1
Seistan-Herat roads are mentioned below.
Karez to Herat, 7 stages, 92 miles. The road is practicable for all arms No. 18.
with wheeled transport, stage 3 might require a few repairs and the first 2
stages prove troublesome in wet weather. M ater and some supplies.

These are alternative routes in 18 A, there is broken ground in stage 1 and
in 18B, stage 5 is difficult, but there seem to be no great difficulties by either
route. Only a small quantity of water on these routes.
Ghurian to Herat, 3 stages, 39 miles, stage 2 somewhat difficult ; water No.
