MILAK-I-NUR MUHAMMAD PAHLWAN—
A village on the Milak (.anal, consisting of 150 houses possessing 10
ploughs of cultivable land. Government revenue 120 kharwars. There are

MIL-I-ZAH1 DAN —

A kind of watch-tower in Seistan, on the road between Tiflak and Kasima-
bad. It used formerly to mark the northern limit of the town of Zahidan.
It measures 55 feet in circumference at the base, 25 feet at the summit, 7t>
feet in height. It was built in the form of a cylinder, with a spiral stair
case within, which made three complete turns in its own height from the
entrance below to the top ; but its structure wa^ defective, having no spiral
column, which caused the work to overlap. The top and the centre were
encircled with Arabic superscriptions in Cufic character, of which the letters
were formed by arrangements of bricks. The mil is built of kiln-baked
and glazed bricks.— (Rozario)
In the midst of the iZ ihidan) ruins stands a tower about 60 feet high
with a spiral staircase inside. Round the outside is an inscription in what
appear to be old Cufic characters.
I copied as much of this inscription as had remained intact and sent it to
Doctor Rien of the British Museum, who is an authority on old oriental
inscriptions. He pronounced it to be a form of Cufic of about the 5th
century of the Muhammadan era. He was unable to decipher more than
the words “ab Sultan ab Muzaffar. , Salatan ab Islam'*, but
could find no date nor proper name that could lead to the identification of
the Sultan who erected the tower. r ihe transcript was no doubt imperfect.—

A military report on the Seistan [Sistan] region of Persia, written by Captain J M Home. Printed at the Office of the Superintendent of Government Printing, Calcutta, India, 1902. The report contains a preface (folio 3), a glossary (folio 5), and chapters on geography, communications, fortresses, climate, resources, ethnography, history, administration, naval and military, politics, and strategical positions. Also included (folios 51-90) is a gazetteer of Seistan, arranged in alphabetical order. At the back of the report is a map showing the routes described in Appendix A (folio 91).
