latter, however, it is admitted, are by far the most numerous. Bellew says
the Sarbandi families in Seistan are less than 4,000; Sykes puts them
down at 3,000. Their original settlements in the qountry are given in the
following list; but they have, since the time of Nadir, taken possession of
almost all the Kayani territory, west of the Helmand, as has been shewn in
the preceding pages : —

Chiling,
and a few other hamlets.

There are Sarbandis. Shehrakis and Kayanis still in Seistan, but as clan 8
they have well-nigh ceased to exist. Their Chiefs are of no account, and
none occupy a higher position than that of a village Kadkhuda. They
themselves are being merged into the general population.
To enter into more detail, as far as 1 was able to gather the ^arbandis
now number about 2,000 families scattered all over the country. The Chief
is Purdil Khan, Kadkhuda of Daulatabad, and the principal villages that
contain a proportion of Sarbandis are : —
Seh Kuha, Varmal, Daulatabad, Chiling, Dadi, Ilueainabad, Banjar,
Tokil, Pulgi, Gusha or Kusha, Kala Nau, Akbar Abbas.-(//. D. Napier,

dated 5th April, 1897, to

Khwash, the capital of Sarhad on which now stands the new frontier fort
( Persian ), is the lawful territory of the Sarbandis of Seistan, the annexa
tion of which by the Kajars has been the cause of the bitter hatred engen
dered against them by Jahund Khan and his followers, who for eighteen
generations have been independent.

A military report on the Seistan [Sistan] region of Persia, written by Captain J M Home. Printed at the Office of the Superintendent of Government Printing, Calcutta, India, 1902. The report contains a preface (folio 3), a glossary (folio 5), and chapters on geography, communications, fortresses, climate, resources, ethnography, history, administration, naval and military, politics, and strategical positions. Also included (folios 51-90) is a gazetteer of Seistan, arranged in alphabetical order. At the back of the report is a map showing the routes described in Appendix A (folio 91).
