«. a t e r smells strongly of sulphurated hydrogen and has a decided aperient
effect. On being filter'd and tested with nitrate of silver there was *
considerable deposit.
South well. Water 12 feet from surface, io feet deep. A working
party, working the whole of one morning, failed to empty it. The natives
say there is a large spring at the bottom of it. . f .
East well. Water 12 feet from surface, 4 feet deep, 2 | feet diameter,
refills in one hour.

Grass.—~ Barshok in small quantities. Abundance of this grass in
neighbourhood that could be collected and brought in.
Camel-grazing .— In great abundance, consisting chiefly of tagaz.

This is a great camel-grazing district: several hundreds should be

^ camping-ground, 13 ! miles from Umbai (Humai) on the Kam-
Shah Ismail road. The road is very easy, except at a steep kotal, 240 feet
fticrh, 2 | miles from Humai. Ample water for a brigade at Galur, 2 feet
be”ow surface; any number of wells easily sunk in clay soil. A little
water sufficient for watering camels comes to the surface and flows tor
a few yards about i mile north-east of camp. ,
The thermometer on the night of the 25 th January 1903 registered 10
degrees of frost. [McMahon.)

The name given to low sand-hills passed on the road from Shah Ismail
to Umbai on the Nttshki-Helmand route. They begin about 13 miles
from Shah Ismail. [Maitland.)
GAMI CHAH.—Lat. 29 0 10 '; Long 62 ° 43 ' i *pev.
A camping-ground, among the north-western denies of the Koh-i-
Sultan. Here there are two wells with one and a half feet of water in
them- water twelve feet from surface. The water is brackish and unpalat
able ’though animals will drink it. The camping-ground is in the bed of
the nala and is commanded by high hills. There are no supplies obtain
able and camel-grazing is scarce ; grass none in vicinity.
The wells are situated in the middle of the nala-he&, and Soo yards
south of a narrow gorge through which the road from Manzil runs.
This gorge is 1,150 paces long and its narrowest part, 720 paces from the
northern mouth, is only 7 paces wide ; its general width varies from 20
t° 5 ° paces with inaccessible precipices as banks the track along the
bottom is very sinuous. The bottom of the gorge is composed of fine
shingle. As might be expected from being situated near the centre of
an extinct volcano the scenery is remarkably bold, fantastic and pictures
que ; the volcanic ash of which the neighbouring hills are composed
giving all the colour necessary. [Roome.)
